Ways to Protect Your Phone with Accessories

You get a new phone. It is your pride and joy. Everywhere you go, it goes. But then one day your phone has a nasty accident, gets kidnapped or gets infiltrated by an enemy covert operations unit and subjected to a virulent brainwashing attack and it is never the same again. All these scenarios happen. They happen very regularly, in fact. The good news is that there is a lot you can do about it. Below is a range of armour to protect your, well let’s face it, your nearest and dearest.

Invisi-shield protectors

If I had a pound for every time one of my friends, or indeed my good self, cracked the screen on a mobile phone I would be a millionaire. Mobile phone screens are fragile little things and they just don’t do well when get dropped, smashed angrily against a wall in frustration, have hot tea liberally applied all over the surface or get stepped on by your big oaf of a brother. The problem is that a cracked screen, when not a status symbol of the uncaring too-cool-for-school types, is very annoying and of course not cheap or that easy to replace. Invisi-shield protectors are cheap mobile-screen saving devices.

Silicone Covers

More of a fashion statement than a real protector. These come in a range of different patterns and designs. They particularly appeal to teenage girls looking for a bit of bling on the back of their phone. For some reason my girlfriend also loves them and has one with very fetching plastic diamond studs arranged in the shape of a cat. She loves having the cat stare up at her when we go out to eat. I have developed a slight fear of the feline monstrosity. But then, I am easily scared…

Camden Town, London, and in fact almost any place with market stalls, will sell them in an abundance of styles. Unfortunately, where they succeed in looking – cough, cough, hack, cough and cough again  – cool, they lack anything like even basic protection. In fact, I only included them in this article so I could provide you with a very clear, stark piece of advice to invest your fiver (please tell me you didn’t pay anymore) on anything but them. In addition to providing nothing in the way of protection for your screen, which in case you had forgotten is the most vulnerable part of your phone, they give a false sense of security and also make your new sleek iPhoneor Galaxy Nexuslook clunky. They are also a nightmare to get out your pocket as the material tends to stick to your pocket with an unrelenting vice-like grip not seen since The Blob, which is very tedious indeed.

Hanging pouches

Another one for the fashion unconscious. Actually, I must confess to liking these a little, so much so that I even bought one for my mum once. She loved it. I reckon a bit more love goes into the design, but having one of these hanging around your neck might not be the epitome of cool. The general feeling is that in a professional environment it is acceptable – you always see them in conferences – but that you better keep them hidden behind a top of some kind if you don’t want to draw stares in the street. Such blatant advertising of your wares also may accidentally target an undesirable grouping, namely thieves. Perhaps keep this one under wraps on a boozy Friday night on the town.

Pouches do keep your phone very safe from accidental knocks. And unless you run very fast straight into a wall or any other large stationary, impassable object, your phone will be well protected. That is until you decide to take it out while running down the street and leave it at the mercy of your butterfingers.

Could Samsung Ban in United States be Overturned?

Earlier this year Apple won an unprecedented court victory against Samsung in a Californian patent dispute, in which the Korean technology giant was found to have copied Apple’s designs and infringed upon some of its design patents, and was ordered to pay the US company more than $1 billion in damages. Several Samsung devices, including several US variations of the Galaxy S and Galaxy S2, were also pulled from sale in the United States.

One of the disputed patents was regarding the “rubber band” feature, whereby the screen will “bounce back” once the user has scrolled past the end of a list. This feature was used on Apple’s iPhone and iPad but was also found on many Samsung devices running Android with TouchWiz. Apple’s claim was that Samsung had copied this design feature, which was patented by Apple, and that this along with many other copied features had led to confusion amongst customers who were subsequently unable to distinguish between Samsung and Apple products.

But the United States Patents and Trademark Office (USPTO) has this week invalidated the Apple patent covering this feature after an anonymous reconsideration request was filed earlier this year. Although it is not known exactly who filed this request, it is likely to be one of Apple’s competitors, with Samsung most likely being the company responsible. (However, after a barrage of lawsuits against various Android manufacturers, there are no shortage of tech companies who would love to see Apple lose many of its patents).

USPTO has rejected patent 7,469,381 on the grounds that there is already prior art for such a feature, and that Apple’s design does not involve any inventive steps upon this earlier implementation. USPTO has highlighted that such a design feature was found in an earlier patent for “controlling content display” filed by AOL and Luigi Lira in 2003, and also another patent for “continuous scrolling list with acceleration”, which ironically lists Apple boss Scott Forstall as one of the inventors.

The news that USPTO has overturned this patent, which was a key part of Apple’s victory over Samsung earlier this year, comes shortly after Californian judge Lucy Koh has begun considering a “Rule 50 motion” regarding the earlier court verdict. As the court verdict is being reconsidered, the invalidation of this particular patent could completely overturn the original jury decision, and mean that Samsung will no longer have to pay the $1 billion damages to Apple. This decision would also highlight the absurdity of many technology design patents which, rather than protection innovation, merely seem to move competition to the court room.

Samsung has already removed the “rubber band” feature from its US Android devices in response to Apple’s earlier court victory. Although the court injunction could be overturned and Samsung could reintroduce the feature it may just as easily omit the design from all future products, considering that it is probably not worth the potential trouble it has caused. It is certainly not worth a billion dollar

Apple’s MacBook Pro 13-inch Production

Apple Company is one of the world’s most successful mobile technology companies, the firm that sparked the tablet boom, smartphones, product uniqueness and ability. Apple Company is now reaping more than any other company with its new production called MacBook Pro 13-inch. Apple’s new MacBook Pro is the greatest, and perhaps the final version of the personal computer of the Retina MacBook Pro. It has more portability and fewer expenses compared to a current 15-inch model.

This MacBook Pro with Retina display production, previously begun with the 15″ model, is still retained with the Proresolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels of Retina Display resolution. This is according to news from NPD analyst Richard Shim, in an interview over CNET, “The supply chain indication is that it’s for a MacBook Pro 13.3 – not a MacBook Air.” The displays of its product will be manufactured by the major manufacturing countries like Japan and Korea.

Shim also hinted that supplies for the initial launching for the upcoming 13.3″ Retina Display MacBook Pros will definitely be in a larger number compared to the 15″ which was first seen in the June released MacBook Pro, flaunting that the 13.3″ screen size has definitely a far higher potential to be popular compared to its larger and senior sibling.

The difference between Samsung and LG was touched during the CNET interview with Shim. He stated that Samsung and LG have yet to manufacture something with Apple’s 2560 x 1600 pixels of Retina Display resolution.

Now, it’s very surprising to know that the number of pixels in a relatively small area that an Apple’s Retina has is possible more than any other brand on the market.

Probably one of the biggest attractions of the 13.3-inch Retina MacBook Pro will be its price, expected to be below $2,199, the starting price for the 15.4-inch model. The weight of the 13.3-inch Retina Mac Book Pro is much lighter and a lot more portable than its 15.4-inch cousin.

The production indicates that MacBook Pro with Retina display 13.3-inch is now creating a big impact for the Apple company. Will it be on your wish list to lookout for the new 13.3″ Retina Display MacBook Pro?

Television Technology that Brings You High Definition Shows

Sleek entertainment room, cutting-edge stereos, chic leather sofa; this is the ideal atmosphere for a lazy Sunday meant for movie marathons and show reruns, among others. But wait, does your TV fit in the picture? Does it complement your room or does it downgrade its value? Why not retire your old tube TV and consider some superb options that will complete your ultimate entertainment experience.

Indeed, the television has evolved from a static box that displays moving image to interactive flat screens almost as thin as laptops and netbooks. Gone are the days of CRT technology, because High Definition TV’s such as the latest Samsung Plasma TV are starting to replace them. More so, HD TV’s have variations that you may not easily differentiate by just mere eye inspection. They can be any of the following:

  • LCD TV- This is made for clearer pictures owing to its display mode. It uses cold cathode fluorescent lights or CCFLs and molecules of liquid crystal. LCD TV uses another light source since its crystal screen does not illuminate.
  • LED TV – This uses a Light Emitting Diode instead of CCFLs to illuminate the screen. It brightens the display and has excellent brightness and contrast ratio. More so, it is shock resistant and is a mighty power saver.
  • Plasma TV – the images are displayed by individual cells that are made of neon and gases. It has better pixel responses than LED or LCD. It has a vibrant display of colors and generates black picture quality. The best example would be the latest Samsung Plasma TV so you can view a movie or your favorite show from a high angle instead of watching it head-on.

When looking for High Definition TV’s, do not just go for brand or the latest. Think of other factors such as power consumption and quality. LED and LCD TV’s minimizes glare and is power-consumption friendly. Plasma TV’s however, are ideal for movie marathons and cool flicks with awesome effects.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S III MINI HEADS EUROPE

Samsung Company is set to reveal its Galaxy S III device tomorrow in Europe. From a 4.8-inch body, the handset has shrunk into 4 inches that will have similarity with the iPhone 5’s size. Reuters reported that the latest version will have its launch event in Europe and no words were thrown whether the smaller variety of Galaxy S III will reach the U.S or not. Although Samsung, the Apple’s rival company, didn’t tell important details on bringing the model in US, but it made confirmation on the device’s name: the Galaxy S III mini. JK Shin, head of Samsung Mobile Communications, told TechCrunch.com “GALAXY S III mini will come with 4’’ display and we are going to unveil the product tomorrow (October 11th).”

Engadget.com got some leaked info about the phone from MobileGeeks, the website says that the S III Mini may be a little bit more mid-range than the current model. The smaller version is expected to have a price of 399 euros or $510. Even the phone will have a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, the site suggests that it will only be having 800 x 480 which is a lowly pixel per inch rate of 233. It also points out that the S III’s quad-core Exynos processor will be replaced with an STE U8420 chip locked at 1 GHz. The phone will have 1GHz of RAM and 5-megapixel camera which is located at the device’s rear view.

The publication giant, Reuters, cited Shin, Samsung’s spokeswoman, saying: “We think there’s strong demand for 4-inch screen models in Europe.” The publication was also told that the Galaxy S III Mini would not be an entry-level model—contrary to the leaked info from MobileGeeks.

NOKIA OFFERS SPECIAL LUMIA EXCLUSIVELY FOR T-MOBILE

It’s been a talk of the tech industry that the coming Windows Phone, the Nokia Lumia 920, will be exclusive to AT&T, however if you’re a T-Mobile fan, don’t get so upset just yet because the Nokia has something special in store for T-Mobile  customers: the Lumia 810.

Probably, this is your first time to hear about this type of 810 model. The Lumia 810 is a new product released by Nokia the company. Although the giant firm didn’t unveil this device in their big launch event last month for the Lumia 920 and 820 smartphones, this variant of 820 has its own industrial design and was made to work only with T-Mobile’s speedy HSPA+ Network.

Having similarity with the 820, the Lumia 810 looks decent in his cyan or black casing. With its 4.3-inch OLED screen, 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, and 1.2 MP front-facing camera, you will definitely enhance your photo and video capturing experience.

Nokia Lumia 810 also has the powerful features of Windows Phone 8, such as the cool augmented-reality City Lens that’s powered by Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive turn-by-turn navigation, and Nokia Transit directions for public transport. Although you will likely think that the Lumia 820 is a PureView camera due to its new Cinemagraph and Group Shoot settings, it actually doesn’t have the same low-light ability and image stabilization that the Lumia 920 has.

According to T-Mobile, the Lumia 810 will be available in the market by the month of November. However, no price was made mentioned.

CAMERA & HI-RES DISPLAY EXPECTED FOR KINDLE FIRE 2

Since the Amazon’s Kindle Fire Android tablet will be a one year old, it is expected that the big company will release a newer version of it. According to reports, the next version of Kindle Fire –which is the Kindle Fire 2-- will be thinner and lighter compared to the older one. It will also have features, such as: built-in camera, 1,200 x 800-pixel display resolution, and an upgraded Kindle Fire’s 1,024 x 600-pixel screen. Just for comparison, the iPad 3’s retina display offers 2,048 x 1,536-pixel screen.

Aside from having a clearer and sharper screen, the Kindle Fire 2 will also be slightly squarer. The newer version will have a screen that has an aspect ratio of 1.60, whereas the older has more lengthened screen with an aspect ratio of 1.71.

Based on sources, the Kindle Fire 2 will be available in the marketplace before the month of September.

AllThingsD.com didn’t mention about the second forthcoming tablet. Just last week, tech blog BGR.com reported that Amazon is planning to announce two of their new Kindle Fires by the next month. The two devices will be named as “Coyote” which is a 7-inch tablet and “Hollywood” which comes 10 inches in size. The Coyote is expected to have a dual-core processor which the current Kindle Fire has, while the Hollywood is said to have a more powerful quad-core processor.

APPLE’S iPAD MINI

Speculations over the Apple’s new iPad Mini have already flooded the web since last Monday. This Apple device, which is smaller than the current iPad (that’s why it is called iPad Mini), has two speakers on its rear views rather than only one which the current iPad has.  This small but terrible Apple model uses the new lightning connector that the company introduced with their latest iPhone 5 smartphone. As you can see, based on the provided photos, there is a big difference regarding the sizes between the current iPad and the iPad Mini.

Aside from being smaller than the current iPad, iPad Mini is rumored to be less expensive compared to the older version. Such device is expected to complete the line-up of tablets such as Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire in the marketplace. Moreover, based on reports, a 3G version of the tablet will also be available. However, no confirmation was released on that information’s authenticity.

Apple will be conducting a launch event for their new tablet this coming Wednesday, with an event to announce the iPad Mini taking place on October 17, 2012.

It’s been a common scenario that Apple often keeps private about their products just to surprise the many, but unfortunately photos and details about its iPhone 5 were heavily spread on the online community prior to the official announcement of such phone.

ACER’S SUPER-THIN WINDOWS 8 ICONIA TABLET UNVEILED

Have you heard of a Windows 8 tablet which at the same time serves as a PC? I bet you haven’t, yet, not until the Acer unveils Iconia W510. These models are like PC-tablet devices, they function like a full PC, since they have an Intel mobile processor and at the same time work like a tablet, because of their lightweight form factor and power efficiency that users usually expect from tablets. However, with all of these existing theories on such devices, no one has had an opportunity to test any of them yet.

The Iconia W510 has 2G of RAM and a 10.1-inch screen with a 16.9 aspect ratio and 1,366 x 768 resolution. It also has a layer of durable Gorilla Glass 2 to protect the display from any damages. The tablet can be friendly for photo and video enthusiasts since it supports a pair of cameras using the 8-megapixel camera in back and a 2-megapixel camera that is located in front of the device. The video experience will surely be enhanced since both cameras can record videos in full HD.

By looking on some photos, you may notice that it has a keyboard dock that you can plug the Iconia W510 into a dock and make it look like a traditional laptop. However, the dock is optional and only available on separate purchasing. Aside from being a keyboard, once the tablet is docked, you can be able to add 18-hour battery life to the tablet.

Without the dock attachment, you’ll get amazed on the tablet’s lightness which only weighs just 1.27 pounds. And with the model’s 0.35-inch thinness, you will surely have a hassle-free tablet experience while getting your work done in a laptop mode.

According to reports, Acer’s Iconia W510 will be on sale on November 9, 2012. The price for 32-GB is $499.99 while for a 64-GB version is $599.99.

AT&T TO CARRYANOTHER SMARTPHONE (NOKIA LUMIA 920) EXCLUSIVELY TO THEIR NETWORK, YET AGAIN

If you think that Nokia Lumia 920 suits your taste, it is better that you give credits to AT&T. The leading provider in telecommunications services announced last October 4, 2012 that their company will be carrying another smartphone to their network and exclusively in the U.S.

Even if AT&T hasn’t come up with the Nokia Lumia 920’s pricing yet, the provider still admitted that they are sure that such smartphone will join their line-up of selected phones in November including the Nokia’s smaller brother, the Lumia 920.

The exclusive partnership of Nokia with AT&T over the Lumia 920 has boggled the minds of the many, since Nokia’s goal is to sell the phone to as many customers as possible. However, with the decision to choose only one carrier, which is the AT&T, it limits the customers’ quantity. It’s been a common scenario that AT&T usually insists on smartphone’s exclusivity, especially in Nokia and Microsoft’s case which are known for having a poor share in the recent market. According to IDC, the entire platform of Windows Phone has only garnered 3.4% in the market share which is very unfortunate.

The phone manufacturer revealed the Lumia 920 last September showing its amazing features such as City lens (augmented-reality map) and improved cameraphone technology. However, it was found out that the video and most of the photos that showcased the model’s abilities were simulated and not taken by such phone.
